Notice of Uncontested Election
Five nominations have been received for the nine seats on Ashurst Wood Village Council. Those nominated will therefore be duly elected as Village Councillors and there will be no Village Council election on the 2nd May. The names of the new Councillors can be seen in the above Notice.
The Village Council has four vacant seats, and applicants are invited to put themselves forward for co-option.

This is your chance to get involved and have a say in the future of Ashurst Wood.

The role of a Councillor can be very fulfilling and allows an individual to get actively involved with issues that affect the village and to help maintain and improve services for the villagers.  Councillors represent the views and concerns of the residents to the Village Council who work with its district and county council.  Working with the Clerk, Councillors help to resolve issues and to report to residents’ issues that may affect them.

Councillors have to attend regular meetings – Ashurst Wood Village Council holds at least one meeting a month.  Individual Councillors do not have the powers to make decisions but matters are discussed at meetings and decisions made as a Council; Village Councils are the first tier of local government, they have discretionary powers and rights laid down by Parliament to represent their communities and provide services.   The less formal role of a Councillor is to listen and talk to residents and other members and professional bodies, and to use the appropriate channels to communicate issues.

This is an unpaid position, but if you are interested in Ashurst Wood and would like to apply, you must be a Commonwealth/British citizen or EU citizen and be 18 years of age or over.  In addition one of the following must apply:

  • be on the local electoral register
  • an owner or tenant of land or other premises in the parish
  • work in the parish for the last 12 months
  • have lived within three miles of the parish for the last 12 months

If you are interested in joining the Council, please supply a written statement giving your reasons for wanting to be considered, any relevant experience and interests.
Training is available.
You will need to sign a Declaration of Acceptance of Office, complete a Register of Interests and adhere to the Code of Conduct.

The new Council will consider applications and may invite applicants to attend a meeting to put forward their statement in person.  The final decision to co-opt a member is the Village Council’s.

Please submit your statement by Tuesday 7th May.  The Council will make its decision at its meeting on 14th May.

Please email your statements to Caroline Leet, Clerk, Ashurst Wood Village Council, clerk@ashurstwood-vc.gov.uk
